Re: SoJ/I, Week Five: "Bound by the Beauty" song by song #1

since this is such an important album to me. i must do it song by song -
 
#1 song - bound by the beauty
in 1989 i ended a 9 yr "coma" and divorced my husband of as many years. this
is what i call the beginning of my life, or re-birth. i remember very vividly
sitting at my make-up table on a spring day with the breeze blowing in through
my bedroom window, putting on my make up watching VH-1 on the TV - a song came
on that made me stop and watch - I remember it being this song - bound by the
beauty.  i remember thinking that jane looked like she would be a friend of
mine.  i was struck and mesmorized by the filming and face in the sun sort of
feel. i wrote down her name and stuck it in a cubby in my make up
table.  probably around 1991 i was getting "hear" catalogs with sample discs
and recommendations - jane came up on a page in the catalog saying if you like
kate bush, somebody and someone else you will love jane siberry.  i liked all
three people so i ordered this cd - clueless of the memory of the VH1
experience and note with jane's name on it.
 
this period in my life was rich with self discovery and spiritual awakenings,
and being new to the idea of reincarnation - this song talks about coming back
in 500 years and all this beauty had better be here. i connected very strongly
to this song - and it's a joy to sing along with and really clears my throat. 
years later when cleaning out my make up table, i found this note with jane's
name on it and put the two together.
 
i was very into tori amos who had been taken over by my daughter and played
tori in the house incessantly - like teenagers do.  i felt i needed to let
tori go (and my daughter take her over) because her music had really got me in
touch with my emotions, and the anger and distress of it all, and i was ready
to move beyond that and jane was just the girl to take me into a more
spiritual path. we've been on a long journey together. she has openned up so
much for me. and with a cello to boot! how cool is that?

"Hockey" is a perfect example of what i mentioned when i wrote about
"The Walking" yesterday - jane draws a vivid picture not just of the
scene at the hockey game, but also in just a couple of lines the
boy-now-a-man
speaking with his girlfriend, looking out the window, remembering the hockey
games of his youth.

when i wrote about one of the earlier albums i mentioned that i didn't
think the whole of the album was greater than the sum of its parts. in case
you
couldn't tell, i think "The Walking" is much greater than the sum
of its parts. as i re-listened to "Bound by the Beauty" yesterday i
thought that as an album it's not as great as the sum of its parts ("la
jalouse" has never done much for me, for example). but some of those parts
are so beautiful that this was my favorite jane album for a time, and "the
life is the red wagon" is probably one of my top three jane songs, if not
my favorite.

there's much more that can be written about this album - i look forward to
your comments.
