RE: SoJ/I, Week Five: "Bound by the Beauty"

Finally Ive come to say my say

I havent commented on the previous albums as I bought those after I heard
this one. It just seems right to me to jump on the train right now.

That doesnt mean I have no opinion about the early years. Im really fond of
The Mystery At Ogwens Farm, I really like The White Tent The Raft, I
adore The Taxi Ride, and I can continue if you wish, but for now its Bound
By The Beauty.



First this Living in Belgium isnt the easiest place to discover the not so
evident music. Yeah right, you hear all about Europe, and the UK and the USA,
but always the stuff thats to be found in charts. Nowadays I thank the
inventor of the internet, apart from lots of other things, I discover new
music on the information highway.

Anyway it was 1993. One of the more interesting magazines around here had a
review of When I Was A Boy. This album got the attention because of Brian
Eno and Michael Brook, of that Im sure. Somewhere in that review they
compared Siberry with Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell. Being a huge fan of both I
was interested. I went to them shops and found nothing. So I went to the
library and found nothing but Bound By The Beauty. Rented it and went home.
Put it on F*** what is this? This aint no Kate Bush, this definitely aint
no Joni Mitchell. Hell no. This is something completely different. My
then-boyfriend is the only witness to what happened then.

I listened to the album over and over again. Studied the booklet. I was
smitten with this Jane Siberry. He had no choice but to listen to, but liked
her also. A week later we went on a weekend with this youth-group we both were
members of, and anyone there had to listen how we suddenly and out of the blue
started Im bound by the fire, Im bound by the beauty. duty, I-I-I-E-E-E
everything the verdant the verdant the verdant green!. We loved the album,
and it was a fact Siberry would be no one-album artist to us.



The album itself then.

Bound By The Beauty has that drive and eco-ness which makes it so
appropriate, even 20 years later.

After discovering more Siberry I discovered I liked This Old Earth more than
Something About Trains. The same story for Hockey, I think the
Child-version is much more Hockey.

Everything Reminds Me Of My Dog is lethal fun and one hell of an uplifting
song. The Valley is so intense I sometimes just listen to it over and over
and over and over again (kd langs version is also breathtaking).

The Life Is The Red Wagon is my favourite song on this album. Somehow it
reminds me of all kinds of people and situations and is simply wonderfully
build. I always get goose bumps when I hear doesn't matter just as long as...
doesn't matter ...gotta feel good even though you don't know why. Dont know
why but it works so well for me.

Half Angel Half Eagle somehow doesnt fit in this picture, though it has
this strong lyric. And the f***ing verse is simply scary.

La Jalouse is definitely huge at the right time, but breaks the drive the
album had up until that song.

Miss Punta Blanca is spielerei but good spielerei. I actually once performed
it in school during music lessons and it made people laugh so it works!

And Are We Dancing Now? well I like the song but have no clue how it fits
into the Map Of The World picture.



I mentioned I was smitten by this album when I first discovered it, and it
still works for me as a momentum, and it still works for me as a collection of
songs I genuinely and honestly like. But now, after so much more I feel her
best work was yet to come.

Oh by the way, I lost my boyfriend on Siberry when I brought other work home.
So perhaps this album means a lot more to me than it actually would if didnt
mark a wonderful time in my youth.
