ah maria, maria is on my mind. YAdaYadadada (a new spin on yada yada!)
i love this cd. sometimes i'll just be sitting at my desk at work and break
out into song with maria, or something will remind me of "afloat on an ice
floe - they're floating away" (see the child) ... "today mine happens to be
about a yellow dress" "i love these things, so these things shall i bee"
(honey bee)
caravan, oh yeah, caravan. wow. i can just imagine jane groovin' to the
intro. this is one of my fave's on this cd, and yet, i can't think of a thing
to quote out of it.
a little low on "lovin cup" and "begat begat" but i do love to sing along with
lovin' cup. it just doesn't go as deep as the others go.
goodbye sweet pumpkinhead, oh yeah, i love the deep tone of this song, and
longing so badly to sing "would you believe me if i said that you're the one"
to someone that i really felt that way about. and the red guitar. how i miss
that she no longer has the red guitar. it makes me feel unsettled. and 2:26min
in when she does the ohhhhs, and the guitar, and the deepness in the
background. wow. it's one of my favorite jane moments. it just takes me to a
really great connected place where all is happy and peaceful and loving. (i
don't do drugs really. this is just my brain on jane) "looking for my love,
while my love waits for me" and the guitar, oh the guitar. very nice ending.
wow.
would you go, another great deep tone song, it seems to heal me when i sing. i
think these are much like chanting "om"s
and mary had a little lamb. i love the introductions of the band. nice touch.
i love the sitar at the end it's the little things that make jane's music so
important to me. each detail has a happy place, and fits so nicely there. it
makes me wonder how in the world could one get from silence to there, with
such grace and perfection.
2 minutes empty space, a nice deal, much like the bells,
oh my, my. i loved this song the most when the cd first came out, the other
songs, had to sit with me for a while. my brain was reforming pathways to
fit. but oh my my was an instant fit. i do love the sitar at the very
beginning, the hum and the twang. ah. so nice. "everything you say, everything
you do will come back to stand with you... everything you trust, everything
you feel will come back to kneal with you... everything you say, everything
you try will come out sounding like a lie. everything you trust, everything
you know will turn to dust and blow away. ...crackin into a thousand pieces."
it's a perfect fit.
no one will step forward from the shadows saying: "expect this, it's part of
the path.".. here i go...

this is a week i've been looking forward to. (listened to "Maria"
twice yesterday, to get ready.)
1995 release, with 10 tracks. track 10 is separated from the rest by a "2
minute space", and constitutes almost a mini-album of voyage, discovery and
recovery, with a little lamb.
You will turn off the TV.
i'm still aggressively ambivalent about "Goodbye Sweet
Pumpkinhead", and don't care much for "See the Child" and
"Would you go?". but i'm cool with everything else.
"Maria" is not a masterpiece, but neither was a betrayal of what jane
had been to date.
i managed to get through this e-mail without using the word "jazz".
