OK, there are two possibilities here

The more likely problem is that the drive has developed an error on it, 
possibly in the boot block. This will prevent Windows from mounting it. 
Depending on what version of Windows you are running, you might be able 
to run a recovery program...Do you know whose hard drive is in the 
external case...is it a Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital? Because 
various manufactures have a HD diagnostic & recovery program. Some run 
right from Windows, others your need to burn to a CD, then boot your 
computer with that CD and follow the instructions.
