You cant read text with BNRx. I could have worded it better, but I have
always called it reading the groups, you look thru and 'read' the subject
lines, if they are what you want you get them.

I have, like with BNRx, used just about every text news reader there has
been over the last 20+ years, and one thing most people forget when being
told that X and Y are the best reader to use, is IMO, that text reading
'seems' to be a very personal thing and the best way round this is just to
try them and see what you like.

I dont really like anything anyone else makes out of the box so to speak,
and I have for about the longest time (almost 10 years!) used the older
CVS version of the PAN news reader source code with what I like kept and
or fixed. There is a new version that really *nix only and everytime there
is a problem with some part of it that just gets cut out. Shame it could
have been the best.

The best thing you can do is just ues them, and for quite some time. Agent
had some good points, but also has very big problems and when I last
looked, could not cope well with multi servers a deal breaker. Xnews has
very good filtering/scoring but has other problems like working off line.
Newsman, I cant remember as I did not use it for very long, also I did not
like the way it was always spammed into groups every time something
changed.

SLRN is very good and can do just about anything, but it is a console app
and thats its main draw back which is a shame.

I used to use a reader called the Noworyta News Reader that was by far the
best small (ran from a single .exe) newsreader I ever used. I used to keep
it on a floppy so I could get into NNTP from where ever I was working
...and no google groups did not exist then, a quick check shows its at
v2.9 not what i used but...
http://freewarehome.com/Internet/News_Readers_t.html#1387 has it and
quite a few others you can have a look at.
