Homebuilt box, 1GHz AMD with 128MB RAM, about 7 years
old...  Works perfectly well here for downloads and such.

Have you used linux before?

I'm pretty much linux-only, and say to anyone who asks
they should "give it a go", but at the same time be
aware it means having to learn a bit (or a lot, depending
on how interested you are in poking under the hood).

BNR2 works well for me under linux.  I don't do a ton
of downloading (maybe 40GB on a good month) and apart
from the occasional cleanup of the database files I've
had no problems at all so far.

One (sort-of OT) comment is that if you're planning on 
connecting a linux box to the raw internet you absolutely 
MUST lock it down.  At minimum, take the time to set up
firewall rules and preferably disable all the services you
don't actually use/need too.  I haven't installed linux
from a "real" distribution in a long time, but last time
I did it defaulted to running things that can be actively
dangerous on the unfiltered internet.

Never used W2K but for 98/XP none at all, assuming
you have an ethernet connection between the 2

Use FTP or SCP, or set up samba on the linux box and 
Windows would treat it as just another shared drive.

How I do things:
1. Download using BNR2
2. Check (usually using par2repair)
3. Unpack (usually using unrar)
4. Transfer the end product (SCP used here)
