At home I have been using Linux for the last three years or so, and
much prefer it to Windows.  That said, I don't see what advantage you
would have in switching to Linux if everything is working OK for you in
W2K.  BNR2 works much the same under both OSes; it's perhaps a little
"prettier" under Windows.

Linux is an inherently more secure OS, but that's of little advantage
to you if you just download files you will transfer to another
computer.

If you do decide to use Linux, for fun or to learn about it, you should
have no problems transferring files however you wish to do it.

Ubuntu is an OK distro, though I prefer PCLinuxOS; just a personal
preference.  You might want to visit Distrowatch.com to get some idea
of what's available.  Pay attention to the default desktop environment,
KDE (much like Windows), Gnome (perhaps more like a Mac), or other
(simpler and better suited to low resource computers).
