I agree that adding utf8 support will need quite some changes. And
there is some need for refactoring. But the code of centericq itself
(the one in the src/ directory is actually quite good.

I think localization other than translations is only needed for
timestamps and text encodings.

Yes, it is a lot of work. But the code is very well written so I don't
think it would be to difficult.
