I was wondering myself why the author seems to have abandoned it.
There aren't many open source libraries around supporting AIM and ICQ
(which have both now the OSCAR protocol[1]), or at least I cannot find them.

Latest release is from 2006, so this could be updated.

It could also be done the other way around, externalizing actively
maintained libraries and requiring them (or specific versions of them).
