In my opinion this hell has to do with automake being misused, not that
  automake is the problem.

As you probably know, every library being used by center* is included, and 
when you run configure, the configure of every project (read: lib) is run, 
even when it isn't used iirc. This is ofcourse bad, and should change.

And this then again brings up the issue of keeping the protocol libs 
inside the project, or seperate them.

Lets not discuss that issue here, but in a seperate thread.
