Maximizing resource use for many many targets

Hi List,

I have approximately 45,000 targets that I collect every 15 minutes.  I
currently have my config tree divided into 28 config trees and I will
start from cron every 2 minutes 4 of these trees simultaneously in order
to maximize the resources on my machine and most importantly, get the
work done in a timely manner.

Like this:

0,15,30,45	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config0
0,15,30,45	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config1
0,15,30,45	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config2
0,15,30,45	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config3
2,17,32,47	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config4 
2,17,32,47	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config5
2,17,32,47	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config6 
2,17,32,47	cricket/collect-subtrees cricket-config7

Etc. etc.  I figured starting 4 at one time is a good idea since I have
a 4-processor machine. (Sun V440 running Solaris 8)

Is there a better way to do this?  In MRTG, I could specify the "forks"
parameter and a number of child processes would be instantiated to
handle multiple targets simultaneously.

I was kinda hoping there was something like this in cricket.  But I
haven't come across anything.

How are you other large installations handling a large number of
targets?
