Yes, there certainly are projects that do a bad job of using autoconf.
But that's not autoconf's fault.

On the other hand, if you don't have the developer's tools installed
and you need to make a change, editing a DJB Makefile is typically a
heckuva lot easier than editing a configure script.

redo hasn't been released publicly, but you can see evidence of its
use in the tarball for ezmlm-0.53.
