A trademark is valid when used in commerce.  Cr.yp.to is used in
commerce. Registration is a formality that allows one to sue in federal
court without the need to show diversity or amount, or other venue
questions.  Federal registration just makes the process faster.

Indeed. Use is a the key fact, and DJB meets that.
