Re: Classes other then IN

There's a similar dichotomy in the organization of biological
organisms: "lumpers" and "splitters".

The former tend to aggregate species thinking there are too
many species that are really just population variance not
true species, while the letter seem to want to make
anything with a spot out of place be a new species.

In that sense, making any new service be a new record
type within class=IN is, IMO, the moral equivalent
of what the "lumpers" do.

Beyond the technical aegis of DNS there is the perhaps
less tangible ideal or some sense of freedom. Those
who stumbled into the now-Internet from the UUCP world
perhaps understand this better as UUCP never had a US
Gov component, just Bell Labs and the entire thing
was always community designed, implemented and controlled,
for some definition of "control".

If you believe ICANN will ever make new tlds in your
lifetime, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you. Classes,
are perhaps one way to regain the freedom that has been
lost since the US government, in secret, took control
of the dns.

And note that academic criticism of the recent
shift from an ICANN JPA to the AoC centers around
the idea that this was all done in secret. Plus ca
change, plus c'est le meme chose.

Maybe classes are no answer. Maybe they are. I'm
not sure it's for us to decide, I'd be happier
if they worked and come what may.
