I'm uncertain, but I know in most MS shops, almost any host name is broadcast via SMB (or whatever that has transformed into), and Windows desktops can handle those broadcasts. (I'm certain I'm hosing the terminology here.) As such, I'm see situations wherein a host's name was not in DNS at all, but the Windows clients could still magically resolve the hostname.
