Why don't you just do a quick compile with --disable-threads and see  
if it makes a difference? Then you will know if your problem is  
related to threading.

What shell are you in? I don't think \$${prefix} works. At least not  
for me in bash and csh. But I doubt that's your problem.

Oh, and check out your version of openssl. Totally from foggy memory  
but I seem to remember an issue with dlz with certain distributions of  
openssl.
