I believe it is a bug too.
I have a similar controller and identical problem.

After comparing the eepro100.c code from 5.0.10 and 5.4.0, I tried to 
remove the media-check in the 5.4.0-code, and it just worked...
I haven't looked deeper into the problem yet, but will do so as soon as 
I get home again.
