I can confirm this happens as well in drawer. You click the buddy icon to change tabs, and you have to click again on the text entry area in order to start typing your message. The only keys that seem to be functional are the up/down arrow keys, which change between tabs when the tab bar is in focus. Hitting the "TAB" key does not shift the focus anywhere else. As Mark points out, a more desirable behaviour would probably be to shift the focus back to the text entry area after a tab click. Or at least allow using the "TAB" key to get around.
