Hi Alan,

Nice to meet you. Here's another thought. I spent all night looking for
alternatives for secure IM'ing, and I found something neat: ORT

http://www.cypherpunks.ca/otr/

ORT ("Off the record") is written by Ian Goldberg from UC Berkeley:

http://www.isaac.cs.berkeley.edu/~iang/

You can download the paper, it's only 8 pages and quite understandable.
ORT is very impressive, very clever. It has one neat feature GPG doesn't
have: plausible deniability.

With GPG sugbatyres, if someone manages to read the communication, not
only do they know what you said, but they have mathematical proof that you
said it! With ORT, if someone can verify a signature, they can also
forge it trivially. So they can't prove you said anything.

So, GPG is better for contracts, and OTR for "off the record" :-)
conversation.

There is a library (LGPL) and a GAIM plugin (GPL). I haven't looked at
them. So I have no idea if making a Fire plugin would be easy or hard.

Cheers,
Daniel.
