Hi,

I have a few clarifications about the Bonjour vs Rendezvous vs iChat =20
confusion. The frustrating part of this matter is that the confusion =20=

is due to Apple branding two technologies with the same name: a low-=20
level network service, and a higher level service that uses the low-=20
level service as a minor part of its functionality.

1) Bonjour and Rendezvous are two names for the same thing. They =20
allow your computer to discover other computers on the local network =20
without requiring a central server. They don't relate to instant =20
messaging at all, though Apple has chosen to refer to iChat's local =20
chat support simply as 'Bonjour' rather than the more accurate 'local =20=

chat service that uses Bonjour for buddy discovery'.

2) Apple's iChat instant messaging client supports several services =20
in the most recent version: AIM, Jabber, and Bonjour. Previous =20
versions supported AIM and Bonjour. Because iChat supports more than =20=

one protocol it would be unclear to say that Fire supports 'iChat' =20
when referring to the fact that we can interoperate with iChat's =20
Bonjour chat service.

3) Bonjour is in not reall like AppleTalk at all. In the context of =20
'Bonjour the network technology' it provides two things: automatic =20
IP address assignment, and automatic discovery of network services. =20
This is similar to the AppleTalk Address Resolution Protocol, but is =20
where the similarities end. AppleTalk is more comparable to the TCP/=20
IP network suite. In the context of 'Bonjour the chat service' =20
Bonjour provides automatic discovery of buddies, instant messaging, =20
and file transfers.

I hope this clears things up :-)

Mark Rowe
