That's because the version that is available now is not quite ready for 
the general public yet. If you go to the Fire Forums, there is a link 
from the announcements section.

The alpha build 0.99.1b is not current with the changes in CVS, but 
that is what is available for download at the moment. There are also 
nightly tarballs which you can download and build yourself if you don't 
want to use CVS.

As to schedule... it's always difficult to predict with a volunteer 
project like Fire how long things will take. We are getting very close 
for 1.0, but the team members have jobs, school, and family commitments 
which compete for our attention.

Please note that if you do run a CVS build or the alpha that you should 
make a backup of your Fire configuration files, use at your own risk, 
etc.
