The way I see it is this: if it's not a real buddy, and there's no way
of knowing if the user is on at the moment, then, don't worry about
either.  Let text addresses present themselves as a neutral status of
some sort.  Perhaps identify somewhere subtle that the number may or
may not be online.  I think an alert message (with a checkable box to
make it not return), that appears before sending a message, might be
good enough.

You might want to look at identifying SMS as it's own service type,
too.  On the plus side to that, this would afford the ability to assign
an alias name to each number.  Makes for a very nice convenience.
