Upon thinking more about what I just suggested, please forgive the fact
that some of that can already be done.  Redundancy happens more when
I'm tired.  On terms of usability, unless you set your buddy list to
show on and offline users, you'd never see the SMS buddies [if they are
identified as offline].  So, online status is more sensible.
