Revamp of front page of our website

As a compensation for causing lots of discussion about whether our current 
website theme can be salvaged, I did some more work to attempt to bring it to 
its full capability.

(And in case I didn't say that clear enough: This work is not intended to 
force a decision in favor of the old site. I will of course accept it if the 
votes of the poll show that a majority wants a redesign and the value per cost 
of development is estimated to be high enough.
But we can at least try fixing the trivial issues of the current site before 
we ditch it :)
