Agreed re ideology. However:
- If freenet works at all well, it will be possible to stripe many
  transfers to fetch a big file
- There is reason to think that a large fraction of traffic is for big
  files (the 1M+ bar in the datastore histogram)
- There are "interesting" large files. Such as the Diebold files, for
  example.
- Freenet is slow for freesites. It's not slow enough to be unusable,
  but it's slow enough, and sufficiently rarely used, that a large
  fraction of its content is material which is actually illegal or at
  least sensitive. Some of this is regarded by most here as bad. If we
  make freenet faster, we will get more users, more content, and more
  non-controversial content, and more more mainstream controversial
  content. And maybe even the odd whistleblower/whatever posting first
  on freenet rather than ending up mirrored on freenet.
- There is no technical reason why freenet can't be faster than it is.
