Odd behavior of "make clean" deleting tests?

I am testing a snapshot and found something odd. When you unpack
the tar file it's 20 mebibytes, but if you build and then decide to
clean up (as in "make clean") the size of things falls to 17
mebibytes.

Ok, I remember that there was problems with making the HTML doc and
so we decided to ship it prebuilt. I think though that maybe clean
should not touch these HTML files, leave that to "distclean".

The odder thing is that the HTML files are not the whole story, your
deleting a large number of unit/regression/exploit test as well, which
seems really really wrong. Unless I missed something?

I will append a diff between the before and after make clean states.
