Eric,

thank you for your reply.  Unfortunately, apparently this does not 
change a thing.  After 'ipsec setup start' I get

  ipsec_setup: test: ==: unknown operand
  ipsec_setup: FreeS/WAN IPsec 2.01 ...

and then the prompt.  But a 'ps lawxg|grep pluto' still shows nothing 
but the grep command and 'ipsec verify' also thinks that pluto is not 
running.  When I issue ' ipsec setup start' again though, I get

  ipsec_setup: test: ==: unknown operand
  ipsec_setup: FreeS/WAN IPsec apparently already running, start aborted

Around every two minutes I will also get a pop-up telling me that 
'Network conflict detected. Two connections (USB, serial, wireless) are 
using the same network: "192.168.1.0/24"'.  This occurs whether I have 
"started" ipsec just once or twice.
