Honnestly, given the formidable effort it represents to understand the
Gnutella protocol and its myriad of extensions, plus the cost of implementing
and testing, do you really believe new clients can become functionnal any
time soon?

Gnutella was not built overnight but is the product of almost 6 years of
constant evolution.  It requires several man years of effort to build one
Gnutella client today, and a good understanding of system-level interfaces.
Add to that a good dose of skills, and then you have the right to cast your
own doubts as well.

Then again, one could say the same thing about Unix kernels, and Linus came
along.  But he was not alone, and, surprisingly maybe for you, I believe
it was easier to come up with Linux than it will be to to create a new
Gnutella client from scratch.
