[core-dev] Hello, thanks, and Limwire.exe

Hello everyone. I am researching the Gnutella network using Limewire and after downloading the code I must say "thanks!" to the people who developed it. I was going to work with Shareazaa but am a Java developer and a co-worked suggested Limewire. I was not sure what to expect in terms of documentation, code standards, and so forth, and am very happy and impressed with what you have provided to the open source community. I hope to be of some value and to contribute myself, and first wanted to say thank you.

It looks like Limewire has been refined by many people over a long period of time. Does any one know about many person-years (engineer years) have gone into Limewire so far?

I also have a very simple question regarding the Limewire.exe part of Limewire. As I am a Java developer compiling this isn't something I am able to do as easily. Can I use any C compiler to compile Limewire.exe, and if so are there free open source C compilers that you would recommend. I was not going to bother with Limewire.exe at all, and was planning to just use the run.bat approach, but have realized that without Limewire.exe magnet links don't always work. That is, sometimes when I click on a magnet link the operating system (WinXP) with my compiled version of Limewire (run.bat) running that will correctly receive the magnet link. But often my running version of Limewire will _not_ get the magnet, and the OS will instead launch the Limewire.exe that was installed when I first installed Limewire from the Limewire.com web site. What I mean to say is, I can't control when my development version of the code will be handed the magnet vs. the original version that I installed (the full version).

Because of this I decided to actually learn the whole Limewire system, including Limewire.exe, but must admit my lack of "native" skills and defer to the Limewire community for advice on how to go about compiling/building/linking in the Limewire.exe part of the code.
