Personally, I'd go with jabber, because the protocol is open, extensible 
and can easily be re-used for chats and instant messages on the gnutella 
  network.

In addition you may find that www,echomine.org provides an excellent API 
  to start with, whereas the java implementations of the ICQ & MSN 
protocols are rather poor.
