Well, it depends on how rudimentary you want your client to be. Writing 
your own jabber implementation would probably be a waste of time and 
even libs for ICQ or MSN like joscarlib & msnm-lib are already working - 
even though joscarlib doesn't support the latest protocol versions of 
ICQ and msnm-lib's javadoc comments are Korean.
