ok, so i compiled in the appropriate modules.. now the error message
changes however the problem remains (either all connections are
blocked or the firewall is disabled). the error message:

Using iptables.
Resetting firewall rules.
Loading kernel modules.
Setting kernel parameters.
Configuring firewall rules.
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name
