MinGW/MSYS/Cygwin frustrations

Hi,

I really want to get Ayttm to compile on Windows, since I'm sitting in
front of a Windows machine all day at work and have some things I'd like
to contribute.  However, I've read pretty much all of the related info
from the list and in the docs, and have not been able to get things going.
 I'll try to summarize what I've done so far, and hopefully somebody can
get me moving in the right direction.

My first attempt was to install Cygwin.  I got that running, along with
the necessary libraries, and was really loving the Cygwin environment. 
When it came time to build Ayttm, I got a few errors in ./configure that
required additional libraries to be installed, and in the end it couldn't
find glib-config.  I poked around, messed with paths and whatnot, and got
configure to find it, but it would fail because it said it couldn't find a
certain version of glib (which was funny, because manually running
glib-config gave the proper libraries/version numbers).

So I thought the next easiest route would be to follow the instructions in
the list archives regarding the MinGW stuff at
http://blaniel.free.fr/mingw/mingw.html.  Went through that process,
installed MinGW and MSYS (whose relationship and different directory trees
left me a bit confused) and assorted libs, and find myself back at square
one with ./configure telling me it can't find glib-config.  Well, seems
like my shell is rooted in C:\msys while the instructions had me install
glib (and all those other dependencies) under c:\MinGW.

To sum it up: "WTF?"

So I'd appreciate any help I could get with setting up either Cygwin
(which I like more at this point) or MinGW/MSYS (which leaves me
scratching my head a bit).  If you need any more details, we can go
step-by-step.
