I am using gcc 4.4 on Fedora 11. Yes it is a little odd but I guess
this has something to do with the order in which libraries are picked
for linking. Somewhere in between there must have been a change due to
which the linker is picking the right library in my case. I'll see if
I can put in a better fix -- maybe rename the library to something
that won't clash with other programs.

The right patch would be for Makefile.am. Makefile.in is generated from it.
