Actually the rc.firewall *did* have rules to allow within it but when a
ipfw flush was done it only removed the allow rules and left the default
deny rule. I have since recompiled the kernel for the server to default to
allow, the rc.firewall now adds deny rules in afterwords.

meh I was rushed on that box and I know <---> this much about ipfw :(
