It's not just about that though.  At the moment if people aren't
happy with the EB then they have three choices: try and talk to us
about it, put up with it, or leave.  I can see plenty of situations
where none of those three are particularly satisfying.

I agree that we may not get (m)any suitable candidates, although the
existing EB could always stand for re-election.

Possible; maybe a bit hard to choose which of us would be up for the
public vote big brother-style each year though. :)

Things change over time.  Maybe there are some people who feel they
could do a better job, or maybe there are some of us who would like
to quit but don't know who would replace us, or maybe when the time
comes that one or more of us should quit we can't actually face that
and need a bit of a push.
