Bitlbee is an irc-to-(icq|msn|aim|yahoo|jabber) gateway.
It acts like an oversimplified ircd, to which you connect with your irc
client and everything IM-related (from actual connections to contact
management to IM account management) is taken care of by bitlbee.

I think this pretty much applies to the concept you're discussing here.
