text replacers

Is there a way to do variable substitution in an alias ?

Also do I have to use an alias with a /command or can I use an alias in the 
middle of a message I'm typing ?

e.g.:
/alias fubar  F#%^&@d Up Beyond All Recognition
/save


Now if I type in the following text:

    I was working on this system and it was fubar


How do I get "fubar" in the text to be replaced by what I set up as an alias ?
