how do i alias a nick

So in irssi I see a nick spouting out text:

<@banana666> hello

I want to be able to refer to this person as
<@banana>

or to be clearer, i wish to alias the user 'banana666'
as 'banana'

so further text will appear as

<@banana> hello

and maybe 

 /msg banana 

would work too

Does this make sense?
I think there's an easy way but I can't
find it in the documentation.
