A Jabber server may not be your best option as Jabber uses XMPP while  
MS Communicator users SIP/SIMPLE so you can't send messages from  
Jabber to MS Communicator without installing a gateway between them.

There is an open source gateway if you can work with Linux and Python,  
just Google them.
