Presence 404

I have been using Jabber.org for a while, but once every few months all my
contacts are listed as 404: Remote server not found. Looking at the XMPP
console, this is the presence the server is sending me.

Most of these contacts are on gmail or Google hosted domains. Any idea why
this happens?  The service is completely unusable while this is going on.

I am using pidgin 2.10.9 on Linux.
