Did that happen, perhaps, on January 4, February 22, March 22, April 19, 
and yesterday (continuing into today)?

We have been testing full encryption of communications across the XMPP 
network (which means that communications from jabber.org to other XMPP 
servers are encrypted). Unfortunately, to date Google has not been 
participating in those tests and they do not support encryption of data 
to their servers from other XMPP servers such as jabber.org. As a 
result, on those test days no one could send IM or presence to users of 
Google Talk or domains hosted on Google apps.

Yesterday, along with many other services on the XMPP network, we (the 
jabber.org admins) made a permanent switch to requiring encryption. 
Until and unless Google starts to support a higher level of security, 
you will be unable to communicate with anyone at Google Talk or domains 
hosted on Google apps.

This is an unfortunate side effect of our trying to offer improved 
security to our users. If you really need to chat with people on Google, 
you will need to use a Google account for the time being.

And no, we're not happy about this either.
