It does not make any sense. Yes, this "Error" would cause some problems
(code from MPICH-GM 1.2.1..X):

  if (!opt_string || !conf_file) {
    fprintf(stderr, "Error: Need to obtain conf in GMPI_OPTS, "
            "and GMPI_CONF variables\n");
    gmpi_abort();
  }

So I am pretty sure that the processes would die just after printing
this message. In MPICH-1.2.{4,5}..X, there is no such message.

Unless you are using 1.2.5..9, can you use mpirun.ch_gm instead of
mpirun and add the flag "-v" ? It will give us more information.
