Hey,

Thanks for all the replies, this was really confusing me but 
I eventually managed to track it down.

_Someone¹_ decided to add an epilogue script to PBS (on some of the nodes)
to do an mpicleanup after the job had run, this was compiled with an
old version of mpich/gm and hence was producing the error.

Had I been informed of this, I would have looked there sooner,
ahh well, so much for documentation/communication :)
