But think about scalability.
I can set up a single subagent config (referring to the one
MLM system), and distribute this to 100 different subagents.
They will then all know to connect to the MLM.
  If driven from the centre, I'd need 100 different config
fragments.


And with the subagent-driven registration, I (as the Head
Network Management Honcho) don't need to worry about these
outlying systems at all - I can leave that to my minions
(who I would not trust fiddling with my Shiny New MidLevel
Manager system).
   So the administration can be distributed as well.


Another advantage of driving things from the subagent side,
is that registrations can be added and removed as the
subagent systems are booted and shut down.  The central
system doesn't need to keep track of which subagents are
active - the subagents can update this for themselves.


These latter two become more important if you think in terms of
embedded subagents - perhaps on blade servers or hot-swappable
network cards.  The central system doesn't necessarily know
what cards will be inserted or removed - but the cards ought
to know their current status, so are in a better position to
register or unregister as appropriate.
