I am running net-snmp version 5.1.2 on a machine (rpm
net-snmp-5.1.2-11.rpm - the standard FC3 64 bit rpm) and am collating
data on the network interfaces:
The machine has served a significant amount of data since it was brought
online a couple of days ago:
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:6749967685 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:11221546560 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:911751506080 (849.1 GiB) TX bytes:15560701230401
(14.1 TiB)
However the particular monitoring software I'm using is telling me that
the interface is transmitting at 3Tb/s (it's not - it's participating in
several BitTorrent swarms).
Doing a local snmpwalk gives:
IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.4 = Counter32: 15579620550191
i.e.
ifconfig: 15560701230401
snmpwalk: 15579620550191
Now that looks longer than a Counter32 to me.
I did the same remotely and got:
IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.4 = Counter32: 5568658833
i.e.
local: 568658833
remote: 15579620550191
Looking at the tcpdump of this connection the response gives a 6 byte value:
[41 06] 0e 21 36 d5 a4 e8
I'd expect 4 bytes for a 32bit counter wouldn't I?
It seems that this discrepancy is causing various different
implementations to barf in interesting and different ways.
Looking through the changelog the very next version claims to have:
new experimental tables/rewrites for Linux, including ifTable
Is this a known bug for which I should just bite the bullet and upgrade?
Is it an unknown bug with the same outcome?
Is this a known bug with an 'easy' fix?
