example demon not connecting to master agent

I can't get the example demon from the net-snmp tutorial to connect to
the master agent. I get the message below from the subagent:

"Error: Failed to connect to the agentx master agent: Unknown host (No
such file or directory)"

I have checked the following things and they seem to be okay.

* I am running both the master and subagents as root user (via
sudo).

* I have the line "master agentx" in my snmpd.conf. When the master
agent starts it prints "Turning on AgentX master support."

* The contents of /var/agentx is "srwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 2006-12-04
10:31 master"

* The master agent is responding, as issuing a "snmpget localhost
sysUpTime.0" works.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can try or what the problem
is?

I'm running version 5.1.2.
