renaming an interface with snmpset

We have a number of bayswitches. Some support modifying the interface
alias, some do not.
Running snmpwalk against those that don't I see a MIB
IF-MIB::ifDescr.1 thru 24. Given no security (community name is public,
have write access)
I would think I could reset these to the hostnames using
snmpset switch.fqdn ifDescr.1 s "Hostname"
but it complains
snmpset: No securityName specified
