First thing - that is a *very* old version of the software,
and is no longer actively supported.   I'm surprised it
even includes embedded perl support.

If you are compiling from source, please try with the
most recent release (5.4.1).

Secondly, if you still have problems,
try running configure without the '--enable-embedded-perl' option.

Does that compile successfully or not?
