I answer yours question
Q: Do you mean that the service check does not return CRITICAL when the
Lotus
Notes service is down?
A: When the Lotus is down the check return "Critical"
example: # /opt/sfw/lib/netsaint/plugins/check_nrpe 10.74.72.43 -c
check_notes
Critical
Q: Sorry - what do you mean by current status? the host status or the
service status?
A:Service State Information
Variable Value
Current Status OK
Status Information Critical
Current Attempt 1/3
State Type HARD
Last Check Type ACTIVE
The Current status always is in OK
and the Current Attempt in 1/3, never change

Do you mean that the service check does not return CRITICAL when the Lotus
Notes service is down?
Regarding notification, if the service check is reporting the correct
value, does the timeperiod assigned to the contactgroup/contacts allow
notifications to be sent out?
